Because site work has already begun, Carol Eaton, president of Daytona State College, was careful not to call it a groundbreaking ceremony as she spoke to a crowd of dignitaries Oct. 10, on the Flagler/Palm Coast campus of Daytona State College. But a ceremony was held nonetheless to mark the beginning of construction of the 24,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art facility.

"We are celebrating more than the bricks and mortar," Eaton said. "We are celebrating a significant expansion of our ability to serve the students in your community."

She said this campus is the fastest growing in the school. In the past three decades, starting in its humble beginnings in the Palm Harbor Shopping Center, it has served more than 29,000 students.

In addition to Eaton, the following also addressed the crowd: Florida Sen. Evelyn Lynn, County Commission Chairman Nate McLaughlin, Palm Coast Mayor Jon Netts, DSC Board of Trustees Chairman Mary Ann Haas and Dean Kent Ryan.

The meeting concluded with a student speaker, who added a light note.

"We are excited about finally having some parking space," said Peter Campomanes, vice president of the Student Government Association.
