State Rep. Travis Hutson set up a program this school year to allow high school students to write one of the bills he will bring to the state Legislature this year, with the hopes of signing it into law. And at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 23, at the Government Services Building in Bunnell, the community can see what the students have come up with.

Out of eight presentations from Matanzas High School and five more from Flagler Palm Coast, the students have narrowed the choices down to two — one that would require physicians to notify epileptic patients if they change their medication from name-brand to generic, and the other that would give school boards the ability to sell advertising on school buses. The students will vote for the best bill at the meeting.

Hutson is pleased with the program so far. “Both schools have great children who took it very seriously. You can tell by their presentations that they put a lot of thought into it.”

Hutson is also beginning his own committee work in this, his sophomore year as a state representative. Among the topics he hopes to address are taxes for homebuyers and the rules for identifying sexual predators.
