The sorghum maze at Cowart Ranch and Farms spans about three acres, about half of what it did last year, but Brittany Cowart Kinney said her family is blessed that those three acres grew at all.
With the excess rain this summer, the Cowart family had to replant the sorghum three times, but they were thrilled when the crops rose to 8 feet.
“It's been though because were growing in a season a lot of people don't grow in down here,” Kinney said.
The farm also produced pumpkin and sunflower patches. The combination of the three makes for the foundations of the second-annual Cowart Ranch and Farms Maze Days Fall Festival.
In addition to providing a fun day at the farm, the fall festival also aims to provide farm education and let people know where their food comes from.
The festival runs every Friday, Saturday and Sunday until Nov. 10. Hours are 5-10 p.m. Fridays, 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturdays and 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sundays with the last ticket sold an hour before closing.
Also happening at the festival this year is a pumpkin carving contest Oct. 26, a pumpkin pie eating contest sponsored by Maggie’s Cafe Nov. 2, a scarecrow design contest sponsored by Bunnell Feed and Supply and a corn hole and horseshoe contest.
Scarecrows are due to the farm by 6 p.m. Nov. 9. The farm is located at 8185 W. State Road 100, seven miles west of Bunnell. Cost for the festival is $9, and kids under 4 are free.
