A leisurely, pre-jail swim

3:14 p.m. — 100 Block of South Atlantic Avenue. Resisting Officer, Unassigned Tag. After stopping a motorcycle on State Road A1A for having no mirrors, the officer found that the registration for the vehicle had expired and a decal from another vehicle had been placed on the tag.

The suspect asked, “Am I going to jail?” to which the officer replied that he was going to issue a citation. The defendant then screamed, “I’m going to jail!” and ran east across lanes of traffic and onto the beach where he jumped into the water and said he was going to drown himself.

The officer went into the water and took custody of the suspect. A person watching the incident said it looked like the suspect was disposing of items from his pockets while in the water.

But the defendant claimed that he ran because he was scared, and he denied disposing of anything. He said the decal on the tag was from his other vehicle. He never drove his other vehicle so he didn’t think anyone would notice.

Driving Ms. Dizzy

9:19 p.m. — Division Ave. and S. Orchard St. Driving without a license. An officer pulled over a car for its inoperable tag light, but the driver said he did not have a license and that the car belonged to the passenger. The suspect gave the officer his I.D. and said the passenger was not feeling good so he was driving her home. The officer noted that the passenger lives in Deltona and the car had been traveling east, away from Deltona.

After running the I.D. card, the officer found the driver was on probation for burglary. He was arrested for driving without a valid license, as well as violation of probation. The passenger was issued a criminal citation for permitting an unauthorized person to drive.

Meet my girlfriend, What'shername

8:48 a.m. — 800 Block of N. Ridgewood Ave. Stolen Vehicle. A man told police that his mother’s car had been stolen, after he had used it two days prior to visit a few bars. He could only remember that an unknown female went home with him about 2:30 a.m. When he woke up in the morning, he ordered the female out of the house because he was expecting his ex-girlfriend to arrive and he was afraid she would be upset. The unknown female then left the residence.

About 9 a.m., he searched for the keys but couldn’t find them. Looking outside, he noticed that the car was also gone. Later, he received a call from a man who said he would bring the car back but never did.

Ten beers deep, it's driving time

2:02 a.m. — 50 Block of N. Nova Road. DUI Alcohol or Drugs. While on a traffic stop, the officer noticed the headlights of a pickup truck rapidly approaching from behind and not slowing down. Suddenly, the truck came to an abrupt stop behind the patrol car. It then went around the car and continued down the road.

The officer quickly concluded the traffic stop and stopped the truck after catching up to it. After passing several locations where it could pull over, the truck stopped in the middle of the right lane. As the officer approached, he saw the driver reach back and put something on the back floorboard. When he got to the truck, he saw it was an open bottle of beer.

The officer noted his speech was “thick tongued" and there was a strong alcohol odor. The driver said he had come from a local club after a long “70-hour work week.” He said he had “about 10 beers” and had been arrested for DUI in the past.

The suspect would not take a field sobriety test and would not provide a breath sample. He was arrested for DUI.
