Lost in translation
2:30 p.m. — 600 Block of South Atlantic Avenue. Theft. The victim said she placed a pouch filled with a sterling silver Tiffany's heart necklace ($275) and a two-caret gold and diamond tennis bracelet ($1,500) inside of a pillow case on the bed in the hotel room. She went back to the hotel after realizing the bag was missing, but she was only able to recover an empty pouch.
A hotel worker said he would get the housekeeper who cleaned the room and would provide translation because she did not speak English. Through translation, the housekeeper said she found the empty pouch and turned it in. She completed a written sworn statement in Spanish.
The employee told the officer that the housekeeper’s daughter had also entered the room. Through translation, the daughter said she went into the room to see if her mother was there and then left after a few seconds.
The officer asked the employee to translate the statement of the daughter and it did not match what she said. In the written statement, the daughter said she cleaned the stove and left after a few minutes. The employee said, when rooms are entered, it is recorded on the room keys but it takes a few days to get the information. The officer ran a pawn search on the daughter and found an extensive history.
