Seabreeze High School scored early in their season opener against Spruce Creek Thursday, Aug. 29, with a 27-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Conner Blair to Marcus Bullard.

“We felt like if we could get on them early, they may turn it down a little bit,” said Seabreeze head coach Marc Beach.

The scoring didn’t end there. Blair threw another touchdown pass to Charles Nelson and kicker Haden Hoggarth nailed a 22-yard field goal to bring the Sandcrab lead to 16-0 at halftime.

To begin the second half of play, Josh Stevens scored on an 80-yard run, which was followed nine minutes later by another touchdown pass to Nelson.

“Connor played a great game throwing the football tonight,” Beach said. “And our O-line did great against the Spruce Creek pressure.”

Spruce Creek avoided a shutout in the fourth quarter, with a 41-yard field goal by kicker Jagger Leib. Seabreeze answered with a 15-yard rush by Gage Vandiver for another touchdown, which brought the final score to 36-3.

“Defensively, we just need to keep working to get off the field on third down,” Beach said. “We’re not winning third downs, and it’s not a lack of effort — we only gave up three points tonight, so were OK.”

Next week, the Sandcrabs will host the Flagler Palm Coast Bulldogs at Daytona Beach Municipal Stadium.

“We’ve got some guys who can run, but so does FPC,” Beach said. “They are going to be well coached on both sides of the ball and they have some speed on both sides too. We’re gonna have to be ready to play.”

Last season, Seabreeze fell to FPC 11-7.
