For students in grades 9 to 12, the contest is called “Voice of Democracy.” Students must write an essay on the theme “Why I am optimistic about our nation’s future” and then audio-record it as a speech on a CD. The recording must be three to five minutes long and submitted along with the typed essay. The top national award is $30,000.
For students in grades 6 to 8, the competition is called the “Patriot’s Pen Youth Essay.” The essay must be a 300-400 word composition on the theme “What patriotism means to me,” and the top national prize is $5,000.
Essays are judged at the local level before moving on the district, state and national levels. They should be submitted to VFW Post 8696 with a completed entry form, available at most local schools. The deadline is Nov. 1.
