The Flagler Palm Coast cross-country opened its season on a high note last weekend, when the boys team finished second and the girls team finished fifth at the annual Spikes and Spurs meet, held at the Flagler County Fairgrounds.

The Lady Bulldogs were without top runner Josie Davis (knee), but she’ll be back this week, according to coach Dave Halliday.

Sophia Clark finished 13th overall, at 21 minutes, 51 seconds. Darien Halliday finished 18th overall (22:32), and Brittany Marino finished 29th (23:41). Newcomers Anna Walls (25th, at 23:23) and Carissa McClellan (31st, 23:42) had a strong showing, too.

The girls team finished fifth out of six teams, with 106 points (the lower, the better). Creekside took first place, with 38 team points.

The boys team finished second to No. 2-ranked Mandarin, with 75 points. Mandarin had 26.

Co-No. 1 runner Markell Peck did not race (family obligations). Ashton Garrett took seventh, finishing in 17:09, missing a personal record by one second. Tyler Diniro (11th, 17:22), Luis Cordero (18th, 17:45), Kadeem Wynn (22nd, 17:54) and Jonathan Ling (46th, 19:08) all set PRs. Brandon Roa also finished 17th, in 17:38, and Chase Rogers finished 35th, in 18:30.

“Five sub-18-minutes in August on the same date? Not bad,” Halliday said, adding that it would have been six if Peck was at the race. “So, the boys are off to a strong start.”

FPC competed at the Edgewater Invite on Friday in Orlando. See www.PalmCoastObserver.com for results.
