To judge the colors, bring in the color experts. Helene and Eric Bess will display their artwork Saturday, Sept. 14, at the Flagler County Art League, when they act as judges for the September show.

Color is an integral part of what the Besses create, which is why they will be offering critique for the show, “Every Color has a Story.” The show will open 6-9 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 14, at the gallery, 160 Cypress Point Parkway, Suite 207C.

In their own art, the Besses employ the techniques of painting, collage and mosaic in a unique art form they call “papier collé.” They draw inspiration from innovators like Modigliani and mixed media masters like Klimt.

The works combine illustrative painting with a blend of exotic papers, glass beads, stained glass, mosaic tile and other materials — merging individual styles into one image. The desired effect is paradoxical: painting and collage, whimsy and elegance, contemporary and classical. The work is edged with a coordinating color and glazed, producing a finished, frameless work of art.

“To me, the purpose of art is to celebrate beauty,” Eric Bess said.

The couple, who also specialize in artistic embellishments, have transformed their home into a showpiece with murals, mosaics and painted furniture.

Their Hammock home hosts open houses the first Saturday of each month. Almost everything in the home is for sale, but their home is not.

“I have a vision of The Hammock in the next 10 years. I can really see that the whole Hammock community could turn into the place to go for art shows and interesting artists,” Helene Bess said.
