FPC's Alfred Shavers wins national qualifier, advances to next round

Alfred Shavers, a junior wrestler at Flagler Palm Coast High School, took first place in the 120-pound class of the Super 32 national qualifier last weekend, in Atlanta. 

Shavers knocked off state champions and nationally ranked wrestlers en route to the title. With the win, Shavers qualifies for the Super 32 National Tournament, which will be Oct. 26-27, in Greensboro, N.C.

Shavers was a state quarterfinalist last season.

FPC had other wrestlers compete at the national qualifier, too. Those results are as follows:

Jake Koscahiner went 6-2 and finished in the top 6 at 113 pounds
Evyn Insalaco went 5-2 and finished in the top 8 at 113 pounds
Colin Larroco went 1-2 at 132 pounds
Jackson Trivett went 2-2 at 145 pounds
Justin Boyle went 5-2 and finished in the top 8 at 152 pounds

Each wrestling bracket included 64 wrestlers per weight class.

The Conservatory Course re-opens after renovation
After three months of renovation, The Conservatory Course at Hammock Beach Resort re-opened Aug. 30.

The course, which is a Tom Watson signature design, features a 7,776-yard layout, which has hosted a PGA Tour event.

The course features one of the newest putting surfaces in the industry by transitioning the type of grass on its greens from TifEagle to Paspalum Platinum.

The Paspalum Platinum strain is a saltwater-tolerant grass being used more frequently in tropical environments, making it a perfect fit at the oceanfront Hammock Beach. The resort used a non-invasive, no-till planting method to cause minimal disruption to the underlying root structure.

Located on 140 acres featuring dramatic elevation The Conservatory is Florida’s longest course and features the highest slope rating (78.2).
