Matanzas cross-country finishes ninth, 10th at Katie Caples Invitational
For the first time in several years, the Matanzas High School cross-country teams competed in the Katie Caples Invitational, which took place at Bishop Kenny High School, in Jacksonville.
The boys team competed in the elite race an finished 10th out of 21 teams. Drake Goodman led the team, finishing 26th overall in a time of 17 minutes, 37 seconds. Liam Conville (50th, 18:12), David Perez (51st, 18:13), Anthony Colasanti (56th, 18:18) and River Marti (102nd, 19:41) rounded out the top five.
The girls team, which features several newcomers, finished ninth out of 21 teams, competed in the girls varsity race.
Newcomer Payton Tucker led the way, finishing 24th in 22:50. Briana Evans (35th, 23:31), Morayna Thorpe (41st, 23:44), Chase Kroul (55th, 24:40) and Kristie Albano (65th, 25:00) rounded out the top five.
Coach John White said the girls team has overcome injuries, and he expects their times to improve throughout the season.
Matanzas heads to Key West next to compete in the Key West Conch XCursion on Saturday.
FPC cross-country takes third at Edgewater Invitational
The Flagler Palm Coast cross-country teams both finished third on Friday night at the 42nd-annual Edgewater Invitational, in Orlando.
“Great efforts by both teams in the mud and rain,” coach Dave Halliday said. “We were probably one minute slower (than normal).”
The boys team had four runners finish in the top 15: Ashton Garrett (11th, 17:57), Tyler Diniro (12th, 17:59), Markell Peck (13th, 18:06) and Brandon Roa (14th, 18:08).
The girls team had two runners finish in the top 15: Darien Halliday (ninth, 22:05) and Sophia Clark (11th, 22:10).
Palm Coast’s Autumn Trails 5K: Sept. 14
Fall is on its way, and so it’s time for the city of Palm Coast’s annual Autumn Trails 5K Run/Walk along the St. Joe Walkway, in the vicinity of Linear Park. The Autumn Trails 5K will be Saturday, Sept. 14, with parking at the Palm Coast Community Center, 305 Palm Coast Parkway N.E.
The run will begin at 8 a.m., with the kids fun run at 9 a.m.
The Autumn Trails 5K is the final race in the 2012-13 Palm Coast Running Series.
Overall first-place male and female winners, as well as first-, second- and third-place runners in 15 age groups, will be given awards immediately following the races, along with awards for the end of the running series. The race will be timed and scored by Red Pointer Productions.

Participants may also pre-register in person 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sept. 12-13, at the Community Center, or on the day of the race, beginning at 6:30 a.m., also at the Community Center.
Packet pickup will be available 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Sept. 12, and 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sept. 13, at the Community Center. Participants can also pick up their packets on race day at the Community Center after 6:30 a.m.
Entry fees and pre-registration deadlines are as follows:
$25 online and in-person (closes 5 p.m. Sept. 11)
$30 in-person (8 a.n. to 5 p.m. Sept. 12-13
$30 day of race (cash or checks only at 6:30 a.m. Sept. 14)
Student rate for 18 and under is $20
Registration for the Fun Run is free for children 6 and under
Registration for the Autumn Trails 5K is free for veterans with military ID
Those who pre-register in advance will receive a tech shirt and goody bag. Water stations will be available along the route, and refreshments will be served at the award ceremony.

It’s here, and it’s reel: Flagler Sportfishing Club to host 25th-annual Inshore Fall Classic
The Flagler Sportfishing Club will host its 25th-annual Inshore Fall Classic fishing tournament Saturday, Sept. 14.
This year’s beneficiary will be the Epilepsy Foundation of Florida. There will be cash prizes for first through fourth places for trout, redfish and flounder. There will also be a Flagler Slam, which pays a cash prize for one angler who catches all three species. There is a mandatory captains meeting 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 13, at Fuego Del Mar, 608 Oceanshore Blvd., in Flagler Beach. Registration forms for this tournament can be found at fcsportfishing.com and must be completed by Sept. 11.
There will be a late registration at Fuego Del Mar, beginning at 5:30 p.m., with a $5 late fee. Entry fees are $50 for non-club members and $40 for members. Children under 12 are welcome with an entry fee of $15 and will be awarded trophies. The first 100 adult anglers will be given a tournament T-shirt, a gift bag and a raffle ticket.
This is a boat tournament, and anglers must check out at Herschel King Park, Bings Landing, Granada Pier Bait & Tackle or under the State 100 Bridge in Flagler Beach. Check out time is 7-8 a.m. Saturday. Weigh-in will be at Herschel King Park between 3 and 4:30 p.m. All weigh-ins must come by water to Herschel King Park.
