Leading 17-11 during the first game Thursday night against Seabreeze, the Matanzas Lady Pirates volleyball team appeared to be on cruise control to win the game. But Seabreeze rallied, went on to win the first game and then the match, 3-1.
It was a tough district loss for Matanzas (2-6), but it was another learning experience for a relatively inexperienced team, Lady Pirates coach Julie Menendez said.
“So far, this year has been very exciting even though our record doesn’t show it,” Menendez said, adding that her team is scoring points, but not winning games.
Matanzas has been able to contend with teams it never has before, but the wins aren’t showing up quite yet.
Five times through the team’s first eight games, Matanzas has taken teams to overtime in the score, fighting for the set. (The first four games are played to 25, but the team must win by two points.)
For a team with two seniors, two juniors and five sophomores, Menendez expects her team to figure things out as the season goes on.
“This is only the second year these girls have played together,” Menendez said. “We are still young and still struggle with finishing the game, but it is only a matter of time until we figure it out.”
