More than 100 people showed up at the Florida Hospital Flagler Thursday for a seminar on knee pain.
The presentation by orthopedic surgeon Jeffrey Keen covered common causes of knee pain and available treatments, including total knee replacement.
One common cause of knee pain, Keen said, is osteoarthritis.
“Osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis. It is often called ‘wear and tear’ arthritis,” he said. “With osteoarthritis, the joint becomes pitted, eroded and uneven, which can be very painful.”
It’s most common in people over the age of 45, and more common in women than in men, Keen told the audience.
Keen is interested in cartilage injuries in the knee, and he performs cartilage resurfacing techniques. He also performs total knee replacement surgeries and ligament reconstruction.

Oceanside Chiropractic to Offer Allergy Treatments
A local chiropractic office that opened less than half a year ago is now offering a new service: allergy tests conducted by doctors and staff from the Gainesville Medical Center.
“A lot of people have allergies to a certain extent, but it might not be the full-blown allergy,” said Dr. Tracie Restieri, owner of Oceanside Chiropractic. “It can cause problems they don’t even know are allergy-related, like headaches or irritable bowel syndrome."
Some of the tests performed by Gainesville Medical Center staff, who travel out to the clinic to perform them, are more sophisticated than the old scratch tests often used to diagnose allergies, Restieri said.
The center also does blood tests for both environmental and food allergies and is preparing to expand to test for food additive allergies as well, she said.
In some cases, they offer immunotherapy, a treatment designed to reduce the patient’s body’s reaction to an allergen.
Resteri said she doesn’t profit from the allergy tests performed at her office, except in cases where she helps coordinate a patient’s treatment plan.
Offering the service, she said, is all about offering the holistic type of care that people are seeking when they decide to see a chiropractor.
“By taking care of these allergies, the patient’s body responds better to treatment and heals faster, and they’re happier,” she said.
