Seabreeze girls dominate week, finishing first twice
The Seabreeze girls cross-country team had a successful week of meets last week, taking first place at two different meets.
First, Seabreeze took first place Sept. 17 at the Mainland Dual Meet, with all seven girls finishing in the top 10. The Lady Sandcrabs had a team score of 19.
The Lady Sandcrabs followed up their first-place finish at Mainland with another win at the Embry-Riddle Asics Cross-Country Meet on Sept. 21. Seabreeze finished first out of 13 other schools in the large division (Class 3A and Class 4A). Seabreeze had six runners in the top 20, and four runners in the top 10.
Kianna Bonnet led the way, finishing first overall in the race in 20 minutes, 15 seconds. Elizabeth Murray (4th, 20:51), Alyssa Bayliff (5th, 21:17), Josie Gray (6th, 21:18), Lea Gray (17th, 22:28), Forever Young (18th, 22:33 and a personal record), Ashley Beers (38th, 23:55) and Emily Tillman (59th, 25:13) rounded out the team’s seven finishers.
“(The Embry-Riddle course) has all types of terrain: grass, hills, sand, mulch, concrete, gravel and a lap on the ERAU track,” coach Debora Diaz said. “It’s a true cross-country course.”
Seabreeze will travel to Titusville on Sept. 28 to run in the FLRunnres.com Race of Champions, which is an invite-only race for top cross-country programs throughout the state.
Seabreeze was unranked before the season began, but the Lady Sandcrabs are ranked No. 7 in Class 3A, according to Diaz.
Ormond Beach PRIDE teams continue to win
It’s still early in the season, but the Ormond Beach PRIDE youth football teams have been the definition of domination.
Fresh off a sweep two weekends in a row, the PRIDE swept all of its Sept. 21 games against the Oak Hill Saints. With the win, the PRIDE teams are now 16-2 this season.
Results from Saturday:
First-grade team wins 13-6
Third-grade team wins 26-6
Fifth-grade team wins 18-0
Seventh-grade team wins 40-12
The fifth-grade team continued to roll and is now 4-0 this season and has yet to allow any points. Jacorey Stokes ran in two touchdowns, and B.J. Lord threw a 30-yard touchdown strike to K.J. Rickerson to help continue the winning streak. The defense lead by Hunter Willcox, Maliak Brunson, Jordan Colubiale, Glenn Hill, Nicholas Antoine and J.J. Kelly, continue to shut down opposing offenses.
Ormond Beach Sandcrabs go 6-0 vs. West Volusia Wolves
It was just about a perfect day for the Ormond Beach Sandcrabs Saturday against the West Volusia Wolves.
The Tiny Mite Sandcrabs got off to a fast start with Zane Barron picking up a key block by Dante Kennedy and scampering 39 yards for the score. After the Wolves marched down the field and scored, the Sandcrabs struck again on third and long as Collin Wilson turned up field for a 40-yard touchdown. Following another Wolves touchdown, Baron topped his first run with a 50-yard scoring run. The second half featured a strong defensive effort and two touchdown-saving tackles by Collin Wilson. Daniel Lopez added three tackles, and Hayden Heilman had three tackles for a loss in a goal-line stand to close the game.
The Mitey Mite Sandcrabs upped their record to 2-2 on the year with a 28-14 win. Jonathon Campbell led the offense with three rushing TDs, and Luke Lanton added a fourth TD to seal the victory.
With a victory this weekend, the Junior Pee Wee team improved to 3-1. The defense dominated the entire game with Andrew Burnett and Dylan Allison leading the team with tackles. Kelsey Albert and Nathanial Harris both scored touchdowns.
The Ormond Beach Pop Warner Midgets remained undefeated with its win, knocking off a Wolves team that featured several players from last year’s National Pop Warner Division II Super Bowl Championship team. Bryce Phillips scored the Sandcrabs’ only touchdown on a slant from quarterback Connor Loynd. The Sandcrabs led 8-0 at halftime and eventually took a knee to end the game, 8-6, and improving to 5-0.
