If it sounds too good to be true ...
10 a.m. — 1000 Block of Justice Lane. Suspicious incident. The deputy made contact with a man who said he received an envelope from a woman who works for a manufacturing technology company via UPS. The company in question was allegedly located in Indianapolis.
The man showed the deputy the envelope, which contained what appeared to be a check in the amount of $2,450 from a gas company. The questionable check was made out in the man's name and had a printed authorization signature on the back. The bank endorsing the check was located in Texas.
Also within the UPS envelope was a note advising the man to contact a pay officer via email once payment was received. The note also stated that he is to text a phone number in Detroit.
The man contacted the Sheriff’s Office after the bank informed him that the check was not a legitimate check.
Upon leaving the scene, the deputy was called back. The man advised him that he has received several emails from another company, stating that the check in question was payment for his services. The man told the deputy that at no time did he ever perform work for the company.
The deputy instructed the man to go online and contact the FBI in order to properly document the incident at the federal level. He was also advised to follow-up with the Sheriff’s Office should he receive any more envelopes of a similar nature.

Better to ask forgiveness than permission
1:35 a.m. — 5000 Block of Belle Terre Parkway. Traffic Stop. The deputy observed a man driving a car with what he knew was a suspended license.
The deputy stopped the driver and verified that the man was, in fact, driving. The man handed over an ID card and apologized to the deputy for driving the car. The man then made a spontaneous utterance that his girlfriend was tired, and he had to get home because his sister had someone at his house that he didn’t approve of.
The deputy then verified that the man’s license was suspended and that the man had knowledge that he didn’t have a license. The man was considered a habitual traffic offender until February of this year. The man’s license is currently revoked and canceled indefinitely.
The man’s girlfriend removed the vehicle from the location, and the unlicensed driver was arrested.
Spooky stealing afoot
3:05 p.m. — 100 Block of Cypress Point Parkway. Larceny Shoplifting. The deputy responded to a retail store, where he spoke to a loss prevention associate. The associate stated he caught a man stealing three items — two paranormal activity-related movies and one paracord, which is commonly used in parachutes.
The store associate explained that, via the closed circuit surveillance system, he observed the man conceal the items in his pants. According to the store associate, the suspect then approached the checkout counter with a gallon of ice cream in his hands. While the suspect did pay for the ice cream, he did not attempt to pay for the spooky movies and cord. After being approached by the store associate, the suspect was escorted to the loss prevention office.
A photograph of the stolen merchandise, voided receipt and UPC codes for the items were issued to the deputy. The suspect was placed under arrest for retail theft.
