The Flagler Palm Coast volleyball team’s winning streak came to a screeching stop on Wednesday, when the Lady Bulldogs lost to Seabreeze, 3-1, to end its streak at four games. But it might have been a blessing in disguise, coach Shakirah Cousins said shortly after the match.

“Personally, I think (the team) got a little too cocky and a little too comfortable,” Cousins said. “And maybe it’s good we lose now before we go into a district game.”

The next day, FPC traveled two hours west to take on Ocala West Port in a critical District 1-8A showdown.

After winning the first two games, West Port came back to win Game 3, 21-29, and then Games 4 and 5 to win an epic match, 3-2.

The Lady Bulldogs (6-6) have now lost two straight games.

Not much went right for FPC in Wednesday’s game. Seabreeze took the first game, 25-19. The Lady Bulldogs came out in Game 2 with more energy, though, to win 25-23. But in Games 3 and 4, Seabreeze was too much, and FPC couldn’t land any shots.

“Passing was great and the defense looked OK, but my hitters — when my two big hitters aren’t doing anything, we’re going to lose,” Cousins said, noting Olga Nushtayeva and Monica Dorman weren’t landing their hits against Seabreeze.

FPC will play DeLand at home on Oct. 3 before getting a rematch at home against Ocala West Port on Oct. 9.
