A group of Palm Coast quilters dubbed the Hospice Quilt Project donated their 300th quilt April 2, to the Stuart F. Meyer Hospice House.

Of the 300 donated quilts, 265 were hand quilted and only 35 were machine quilted, however all are 100 percent cotton. On average, it takes approximately 30 hours to create a single quilt, meaning these 300 quilts represent nearly 8,000 donated hours. The cost of the materials to make 300 quilts is more than $20,000, not including time.

“Quilts are comforting for both patients and their families,” said Pam Taylor of the Hospice Quilt Project group. “It is more comforting to be wrapped in a colorful, warm quilt made with love, instead of the standard hospital-issued blanket.”

With each donation, the Hospice Quilt Project leaves a note that reads, “From our nimble fingers and loving hearts, we offer to you this gift. May its warmth comfort you, body and soul.”

“It gives me such joy to see these community members supporting other community members,” said Ken Mattison, Florida Hospital Flagler CEO. “They may never even get a chance to meet the person who receives their quilt, but they make them anyway. We truly do appreciate the quilters for their effort of love to our patients and their families.”
