BIG GIRL NOW: Nothing is more hip than working out on the beach

I’ll do almost anything, if I can get a good Instagram out of it.

When I first moved to Ormond Beach, I had a vision/checklist of what my life would be like.

-       Live in a pretty house near the ocean.

-       Have a dog I can take on cute walks.

-       Spend my weekends relaxing on the beach with cool, new friends.

-       Be physically active in a hip way like doing yoga facing the ocean or riding my bike to a coffee shop.

So far, this is what I’ve accomplished:

-       Not on beachside but there’s a lake within 500 feet of my apartment.

-       I love Bear but his walks are more like long distance runs, motivated by squirrel bullies.

-       I went to the beach alone once.

-       My bike is currently rusting in my backyard.

It’s easy to see how I’ve been royally slacking at making my life look hip to my high school frenemies via Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. Since I’ve run many old friends off by forgetting to text them back, social media is basically the only outlet I have left to brag on.

So when Danielle invited me to a kickboxing class on the beach, my Instagram senses went off. I had been posting way too many “staying in tonight” photos and it was time show some signs of a social life. Even if it meant waking up at 7 a.m., on Saturday.

Besides being fifteen minutes late, I showed up to the class oozing confidence. I had taken a kickboxing class with fitness instructor Nicole Yazdzik before and I was sure I had the moves down.

When one of her students started taking photos for Facebook I thought this could even be the start of my career as one of those fit girls in the background of workout videos.

My fifteen minutes was surely on its way.

We started out with some simple kicks as Nicole blasted “Work” by Brittney Spears from a speaker on top of her jeep. Needless to say playing that song – plus other raunchy hits you’d find in a club – drew some attention from the surrounding public.

Everyone watched as the class threw up high kicks and side punches, all trying to figure out exactly what we were doing.

I positioned myself in what seemed like the front row, directly behind Nicole. Exactly where I would want to be in a late night fitness infomercial. Though I was always in sync when we did the moves in class, working out on the sand proved to be a little more difficult.

Not only was I off beat, but no matter which direction I turned I got sand kicked in my face. And the ground itself was hard to balance on so if Richard Simmons was talent hunting that morning, he would have labeled me as a total newbie.

Still by the end of the class I definitely got the workout I was looking for. I may not have looked cool enough to Instagram myself doing it but a good shot of the beach proved to everyone that I was being super hip that morning.
