Gamble Rogers is a name known well in Flagler County. The performer was said to be at the beginning of the peak of his career when he died, Oct. 10, 1991, trying to save a man from drowning while he was camping in Flagler Beach. The recreational area where the accident happened is now named Gamble Rogers Memorial State Recreation Area.
For the last 18 years, the legacy of the man who balanced a love of balladry and folk songs with a passion for storytelling, has lived on through the Gamble Rogers Music Festival. This weekend, St. Augustine will once again come alive with the spirit of folk music with five stages and more than 50 bands.
The festival will kick off 5 p.m. Friday, May 2, at the Marina Stage in downtown St. Augustine, located on the picturesque waterfront at the south side of the foot of the Bridge of Lions. The event will dovetail with the monthly First Friday Art Walk in downtown St. Augustine in hopes of creating a full-blown party downtown.
Saturday, the festival moves to the original home of the festival, the St. Augustine Amphitheatre. Shows begins at 1 p.m. on five stages, including the traditional Pickers Stage, in the tree-covered gully in front of the amphitheater grounds.
The evening will be topped off with a performance by headliner, Canadian fusion folk band, The Duhks.
“We have had many requests to bring The Duhks to St. Augustine over the last several years and this year we finally pulled it off,” said Paul Linser, festival organizer.
The festival wraps up Sunday, with a free-to-the-public CD release party for The Oklawaha County Jamboree CD Project, which features a collection of a dozen or more young talents performing classic Gamble Rogers pieces but with their own interpretations of the music and stories.
“The heritage of Gamble’s contributions lives on,” Linser said.
