More than 600 freshman at Flagler Palm Coast High School signed a commitment to graduate Tuesday morning at the school’s annual Freshman Success Day.
In the fourth year of the commitment to graduate program, Principal Lynette Shott said that the program seems to set a tone for the school year.
“It gives kids some good information to help them get through their four years of high school and be successful,” Shott said. “But it also provides the laser-like focus and the whole message and culture that you need to make that commitment and that you’re not making it alone.”
Parents are also involved in the commitment, signing a similar contract at parent orientation night.
“We actually had a parent produce one of those contracts in a conference with a guidance counselor last year and they said, ‘you made this commitment to graduate, I made this commitment to help you graduate, you need to live up to your commitment,’” Shott said. “So, we know that it’s a very powerful message and it’s been one that we want to continue.”
About 65 student government association members helped to make the day possible providing break-out sessions and games and lunch.
