Twelve women and one man, all breast cancer survivors, received a makeover including hair, make-up and nails Monday, Aug. 18 when the Survivor Glam Squad visited Atmosphere Reinvented in Palm Coast.

“I think that it’s important as a community that we all support each other and come together to do activities for people who have gone through kind of a rough time,” said Nancy Gibbs, who organized the event and is also a breast cancer survivor. “Going through those treatments are not fun. I think it’s important for anyone who has gone through the treatment to get back to where they were prior to cancer. They need to start living their lives and quit focusing on the fear of is it coming back.”

So, Gibbs contacted the Survivor Glam Squad.

The Survivor Glam Squad, which has been located in the Daytona Beach area since 2012, was founded by Keely Webster, after watching her grandmother battle with cancer.

“She prepared for her own funeral when she was in the hospital bed and she looked like she wasn’t gonna make it,” Webster said.

Now, after her grandmother has beaten cancer, Webster said she wanted a way to celebrate the empowerment of women. The day for survivors could come in, forget about things, have fun, eat, get pretty and enjoy friendships is a celebration of them being back to themselves. Their new normal.

The event truly was a community effort with donations being made by Belks, Kohls, Bull Creek Fish Camp, BeachHouse Beanery, Publix, Tom Gibbs Chevrolet, the Pink Army and several volunteers.
