In 2009, the Power of the Purse boasted just six purses, but the sixth-annual event held Monday evening, at the Hammock Dunes Club was a sold out event with a waiting list and now acts as the United Way Woman’s Initiative of Flagler County’s largest fundraiser of the year.
But no Power of the Purse would be complete without recognizing the hard-working women behind the event. One of those women being Women’s Initiative President Jamie Brown, who was also awarded the 2014 Woman of the Year Award.
“She said her passion is giving back to those in need,” Ivone Mazurek said while introducing the Brown as the award recipient. “She is committed in the way of volunteering and creating new ways to give back.”
For Brown, the award was a shock, but she said for her giving back in a no brainer.
“I came from a poor family and I’m fortunate enough now to give a little back,” she told the event attendees. “I do it because I want to give back, not to be recognized. But I can’t thank you enough; this is really amazing.”
