Team Flagler repeats as softball champions
Team Flagler, a senior softball team consisting of players at least 60 years old from the Bunnell/Flagler senior softball league, won the Florida Half Century B Division State Championships, which were held on Dec. 6-7, in Polk County.
Team Flagler had begun the year ranked second out of over 40 teams in FHC rankings, after winning the championship last year.
After failing to win more than two of the four games in any monthly tournaments, the team’s ranking fell to sixth in FHC, causing them to take the underdog role, going into the championship.
Team Flagler’s first game was against 12th ranked Acousti, which they won 20-12. They would win their next games were against 11th ranked Hot Zone USA, 18-8, eighth ranked Suncoast Outlaws, 23-18 and seventh ranked Jax Max of Jacksonville, 25-16, before playing the 18th ranked Silver Rays, which they won 28-15, forcing the mercy rule.
The standout players in some of the games included Tom Knott, Mike Clymer, Billy Martin and John Martellucci.
Team Flagler will begin its 2015 FHC campaign the first weekend in January, in Osceola County.
