Flagler Sheriff’s employee wins bench pressing competition

For the third year in a row, Flagler County Sheriff’s custodian, Jerry Smith, was awarded first place in the state bench pressing competition that was held in Ft. Myers. He won by pressing 308 pounds in the 55-59 age group, setting a new senior game state record.

Smith took first place in 2013, by bench pressing 295 pounds, he set the, then, state record in 2012, for benching 303 pounds.

“I train at Any Time Fitness in Palm Coast at least four days a week,” Smith said. “It was exciting to beat my old record.”

Smith began weightlifting nearly 30 years ago while he was in the Navy. He began competing in bench pressing 11 years ago.

Smith has been employed with the agency for over a year and was recently awarded “Civilian Employee of the Quarter”.

“Jerry is an exceptional employee, and his accomplishments with bench pressing are inspiring,” Sheriff James Manfre said.”

Flagler residents win gold at 2014 Florida International Senior Games

Flagler residents Chuck Nichols and Merlin Nuti-de Biasi won the 2014 Florida International Senior Games mixed tennis competition for their age group, which was held on Dec. 6-10, in Fort Myers.

The two competed in the Palm Coast Senior Games in September, those that were held in Ormond Beach in October, and they qualified for the state championship with wins at Sanford’s Golden Age Games.

“We felt pretty darn good,” Biasi said. “We were really proud of ourselves. The medal is big, and it’s golden, and we really felt like we achieved something special.”

Nichols and Biasi are now qualified to compete in the 2015 National Senior Games, which will be held in July in Minnesota.

The two also won bronze at the Palm Coast Senior Games dance competition in September.

Nichols and Biasi play and practice at Flagler Beach’s Wickline court, where they met and became friends and teammates.
