The Flagler County Marine Corps League Detachment 876 celebrated its 20th anniversary this year.

The detachment started with 51 members and now has 95 members. The anniversary was celebrated at Canfield Restaurant at Palm Harbor Golf Club. The detachment continued its active year with a successful inaugural fundraiser golf tournament in April at Palm Harbor Golf Course.

Funds raised supported local activities such as Toys for Tots, backpacks for schools, scholarships, summer camps, monthly visits to Emory L. Bennett Memorial Veterans nursing home and to continue to promote the common good and general welfare of the people of Flagler County.

The Detachment held its annual Marine Ball at the Italian American Social Club to celebrate the 239th Birthday of the United States Marine Corps. The traditional cake cutting was held with the oldest Marine and the youngest cutting the cake. Past Commandant Recognition medallions were presented to Daniel Hughes, Len VonDerOsten, Barney Spurlock Jr., Henry (Red) Gensch, Vernon Weand, Joseph Kowalsky, Dennis DePasquale and Jack Marshall.

The detachment also presented the Marine of the Year Award to Vernon Weand for his work with Marine Mail, where 150 packages were sent to Marines in the field. At its November meeting, the detachment elected officers for the upcoming year. They are Jack Marshall, commandant; Mike Clements, senior vice commandant; Don Barker, junior vice commandant; and Rich Mikola, judge advocate. Continuing to serve are Chaplain Ron Gagne, Paymaster Cynthia Mitchell, Adjutant Frank Botelho and Trustee Vernon Weand. Darrell Muir is now sergeant-at-arms.

St. Thomas youth and Starbucks partner to give back
Diane Rigoli, the Manager of Starbucks in Palm Coast, in conjunction with Cole Casper and the youth group at St. Thomas Episcopal Church are partnering on a project for The Ronald McDonald House, in Jacksonville.

The Ronald McDonald House provides housing for families while their children are in nearby hospital care. They are in constant need of household items for their facility. The Ronald McDonald House has provided St. Thomas with a list of most needed items. Four collection boxes have been placed in the lobby of St. Thomas, Starbucks in Palm Coast, The Flagler Fish Company in Flagler Beach and the Flagler Beach Montessori School. Lists of the needed items are available at these locations as well.

The collection began Dec. 2 and will run until Jan. 10. Rigoli and the young people of St. Thomas will drive to Jacksonville to deliver the donated items in Jan.
