The Calvary Christian Academy girls basketball team fought until the last buzzer Saturday night to beat Trinity Christian 46-40 and earn the title of Class 2A District 2 Champions.
“The win is huge for us,” said Coach Brian Morris “These kids have worked real hard and, to be so young, with only one senior, it’s incredible. I’m so proud of these kids.”
But “only one senior” doesn’t even fully describe how young the Lady Lions really are. With most of the team ranging from sixth-graders to freshmen, Calvary has the youngest team in their district.
The Saturday night win marked the second girls basketball district championship in school history, the first coming in 2007.
“To sit here after this district championship and be 22-4 is almost surreal,” Morris said.
Palm Coasters Brianna Ellis, Kiara Rodriguez, Hope Hodges, Faith Hodges and Yasmin Perez are all leaders on the team. Rodriguez scored 21 points in the game against Trinity; Perez scored 14 points and had eight steals.
Calvary advances to the regional quarterfinals and will face Seven Rivers Christian, of Lecanto 7 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 6.
