Bunnell Elementary will soon have a sidewalk that will encircle the school and extend to a nearby park.

The sidewalk is in the design phase now, and the Flagler County Board of County Commissioners unanimously approved Monday an agreement with the Florida Department of Transportation, which will fund the project’s $1,856,000 construction phase.

“We’re helping the city of Bunnell,” County Administrator Craig Coffey said in the meeting. “They were in danger of losing this money.”

Money for the project is available through a Local Agency Program agreement, and Bunnell, which recently lost its city engineer, is not LAP-certified, Coffey said at the meeting.

The sidewalk will circle the school then cross a wooded area to the Joanne B. King Park, just northeast of the school.

The park already has ball fields, and the construction project would add restrooms, asphalt parking spaces and a trailhead, as well as improve stormwater drainage. The project’s total length will be 1.6 miles and include gazebos and boardwalks over wetland areas.

The construction would also involve tearing down an old, vacant home that sits on land owned by the county and the school district.

That will probably happen this summer, Coffey said, after money for construction becomes available in July.
