A program for 16- to 21-year-old students who have dropped out of school is helping 46 students learn life skills and work towards their GEDs, and its providing them with certification courses in topics like food handling and CPR.

The grant-funded Road to Success program serves students who are low-income, in foster care, ex-offenders or disabled. All are rated as deficient in basic skills when they enter the program, Director Brian Willard told School Board members at a Feb. 4 meeting.

The average period of time students spend in the program is six months, but they can stay up to two years.

Willard added that the program, supported by Flagler Schools, the George Washington Carver Foundation, The Flagler Technical Institute and the Center for Business Excellence, holds workshops by Wells Fargo, the National Guard, the city of Palm Coast and Global Village.

“I’m a big fan of the life-coaching aspect of it,” Flagler School Board Vice Chairwoman Colleen Conklin said. “You’re changing lives.”

Matanzas student heading to state weightlifting competition

A local student is about to become the first female Matanzas High School weightlifter to go to state competition.

MiKayla Short made Matanzas High School’s weightlifting team in 2011.

She recently took first place in her weight class in the district sectionals — benching 195 pounds — and at the St. Johns River Conference.

Short also throws shot put and is a member of Matanzas’ varsity track team.

Board teams with Air University

The Flagler County School Board unanimously approved a memorandum of understanding with the Department of the Air Force Air University for Flagler Palm Coast High School’s Air Force Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps program.

The Air Force will reimburse the district for program costs for the period from Aug. 1, 2014 to May 30, 2015.
