When Flagler County inmate Robert Connolly is eventually released from the Flagler County Detention Facility, he is hoping to be able to put to use a number of skills he has learned "inside."

Connolly volunteered to participate in the facility's training program, which he began in December 2013 and will certify him as a food handler. Restaurants and food-service companies in the state require their employees to obtain a Safe Staff Food Handler Certificate as part of their employment. The Detention Facility began offering the training last year.

Art League show aims to inspire creativity
Getting in touch with their feelings, their passions and their souls: That’s what artists and poets are doing for the Flagler County Art League’s “Art that Inspires Poetry and Poetry that Inspires Art” show that debuts 6 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 8.

The judge for the art portion of the show is Robin Moore, director of the Art League of Daytona Beach.
In addition to art of all types for display, poets have been invited to participate in two related competitions: one with monetary prizes, and a separate People’s Choice competition with a prize from a select group of pottery created by sculptor Suzanne Susko.

For the People’s Choice competition, the public is invited to visit the gallery on the Thursday afternoon prior to the show, or that same Thursday evening, 7-9 p.m., when the Tomoka Poets hold their Open Mic at the gallery. They will be asked to choose a piece of art, write a poem about it, and then email it to the league, at [email protected], Friday (identifying the piece of art by which it was inspired).

During the Saturday opening, visitors can cast ballots for their favorite among the People’s Choice poems — which will be posted on the walls along with the art pieces they go with.

For this competition, the two judges are Mary-Ann Westbrook, president of the Tomoka Poets Division of the Florida State Poets Association, and Dr. Carol Thomas, who has taught creative writing in the U.S. and Europe.

Silent Art Auction to benefit Guatemalan malnutrition center
First Baptist Church will host an open house reception for a Silent Art Auction 2-4 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 22, at 6050 Palm Coast Parkway. Oils, acrylics, photographs, water colors, pencil drawings, giclees and quilts will be up for auction.

Works to be exhibited and auctioned were donated by local professional and award-winning artists, many of whom are members of the Flagler County Art League.

The public is invited to view the exhibit, enjoy some refreshments and bid on their favorite pieces.

All proceeds will benefit the Orphan’s Heart Malnutrition Center in San Juan, Sacatepequez, Guatemala. A group of 18 women from First Baptist Church will fly to Guatemala in March to deliver supplies of medical items, infant needs, toys, crafts and care for the children.

The Malnutrition Center houses up to 90 children, infant to 10 years old. Mothers bring their malnourished children from all over Guatemala for help; some are often near death. The center is manned by local staff, supplemented with volunteers from all over the world. Each child is treated for three months before being returned to their mothers, in full health. Follow-up care is provided.
