DAYTONA BEACH — Fans filing into Jackie Robinson Ballpark in the upcoming Minor League Baseball season will be greeted by many changes, including a new entrance and more concession stands.
The Daytona Cubs, the Class-A affiliate of the Chicago Cubs, enjoyed success both on the field and off last season, winning the sixth Florida State League title in franchise history. (The Cubs’ affiliation with Chicago dates back to 1993.)
The winning product on the field helped Daytona set a franchise record of 2,518 fans per game, General Manager Josh Lawther said.
The organization is also entering the second phase of a two-year renovation project to the ballpark, also known as The Jack.
Renovations to the ballpark include a new east entrance, near the Volusia County Courthouse Annex and tennis courts. There will also be a 3,000-square-foot covered picnic pavilion that will be located behind the current Dustin’s Picnic Porch. A new picnic prep kitchen area on the backside of the visitor’s clubhouse is also being added.
A new concession stand along the third-base line is being built. A new women’s restroom will be added, as well as additional men’s restrooms.
“All of these improvements to Jackie Robinson Ballpark will allow us to better serve our continually growing fan base night in and night out,” Lawther said.
Jackie Robinson Ballpark was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places Oct. 22, 1998.
The Daytona Cubs begin their quest of a seventh Florida State League title on April 4, against the Brevard County Manatees (Milwaukee Brewers). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. Fireworks will take place after the game. Single-game tickets go on sale March 17.
