The 7-year-old child of Skyler Meekins and William Gregory is now in the custody of Gregory's mother, according to a Feb. 13 story in the Daytona Beach News-Journal.

Wiliam Gregory is on death row, after he was convicted of killing Meekins and her boyfriend, Daniel Dyer. Meekins was 17, and Dyer was 22 when Gregory fired the shots Aug. 21, 2007. The child, Kyla, was a toddler at the time, and she was placed under the custody of Meekins' father, Frank "Hap" Meekins.

Tony Holt, of the News-Journal, wrote in his story today: "On Saturday, a DCF attorney went before a Volusia County judge who found probable cause to remove the girl from Meekins' Flagler Beach home. On Tuesday, a judge in Flagler County upheld that ruling and scheduled a new court date, known as an advisory hearing, for March 14."

In March 2011, after William Gregory was sentenced to death for the double murder, Hap Meekins spoke to the Palm Coast Observer on the courthouse steps. He said his plan was to move to a cabin in Georgia. Read that story here.

When Gregory was found guilty, The Observer also republished the account of the night of the murder, as told through the eyes of Gregory's grandmother. She was staying in a bedroom in the home when the shots were fired. Read that story, "LIFE AFTER DEATH," here.
