The Flagler County Sheriff’s Office will conduct enhanced traffic enforcement this weekend, in an effort to cut down on the number of impaired drivers on the road.
Deputies will use “saturation patrols” 8 p.m. to 4 a.m. both Friday and Saturday, which will be on the lookout for traffic offenses, motorists driving without licenses, those with warrants and drunk and impaired drivers.
Instead of establishing fixed DUI checkpoints, an additional five deputies will supplement normal staffing levels to work targeted zones and monitor the activity of motorists. These saturation patrols will take place in different areas of the county.
Funding for this and similar operations being planned for the remainder of the year come from a three-year, $70,000 renewable DUI Enforcement grant obtained by the Sheriff’s Office in January from the Florida Department of Transportation.
“Aggressive and impaired drivers who get behind the wheel of a vehicle put themselves and others travelling on the roadways at risk,” said Sheriff James L. Manfre. “I want our citizens and visitors to the county to know that we are working to ensure their safety on Flagler County’s roadways.”
Flagler County was recently rated the third highest of 18 counties for alcohol-related crashes.
