Looking at the Seabreeze softball schedule before the season began, coach Tarisa Craig-Craiggy knew her team was going to start with a challenge.
Nine of the team’s first 11 games were District 5-6A games. She didn’t see that as a bad thing, though.
“It’s very crucial to start off strong,” Craig-Craggy said after Tuesday’s 9-0 win over Mainland.
With three straight wins — all in the district — to start the season, she thinks her Lady Sandcrabs are in a great position to take on the rest of the district-heavy schedule.
“We have been able to see our weaknesses and our strengths,” she said. “We can work on what we need to work on.”
Last season, Seabreeze finished 16-6 and second in the district to Deltona. But with the starting battery of Britnee Dowd and Taylor Lee returning, the Lady Sandcrabs eye a first-place finish in the district this season.
In Tuesday’s game against Mainland, senior Alana Hand got the start on the mound, tallying nine strikeouts to pick up the win. Seabreeze plated two runs in the top of the first inning and another two in the fifth before tacking on five in the sixth inning.
Mainland’s Kaitlyn Henderson struck out nine in the loss.
