Springtime means baseball, softball and a lot of hope.

BY ANDREW O'BRIEN | SPORTS EDITOR

Earlier this week, when I was in our Palm Coast office, I got to talking to Executive Editor Brian McMillan about Spring Training and the upcoming baseball season.

After a long, cold winter (well, mostly cold in every state but Florida), baseball season is finally here. There’s so much optimism during the spring. We’re both Mets fans, and for the past four springs, we have talked — with huge smiles, might I add — about how the Mets could be a contender, about how their starting rotation could be the best in the Bigs.

I think we all know how that has panned out during the actual season. (The Mets haven’t had a winning season since 2008.)

If there is a time to be excited, though, now seems to be it. And as far as I’m concerned, the Mets have as good a chance to win the division as the Braves or Nationals.

You know what is also underway? High school softball and baseball. Well, sort of.

Inches of rain have flooded many of the area fields, and so many games have been postponed. But hopefully that will change over the coming days and weeks so that we can begin our baseball/softball coverage.

Ormond Beach Golden Spikes win big

Speaking of baseball, there was no spring hope for three Ormond Beach Golden Spikes teams over the weekend.

The Ormond Beach Golden Spikes 9U, 11U and 12U teams won their respective age groups in a United States Specialty Sports Association tournament, in Port Orange.

Congrats to all three of the Spikes teams on a job well done!
