It’s that time of year again. I’m sure you have seen them: the girls in the sashes, peddling those delicious boxes of goodness.
That’s right: the Girl Scouts. And they come bearing cookies.
I have to make a conscious effort to avoid the grocery store and friends with children during this time of year, otherwise I end up with a freezer full of boxes and a nasty, sleeve-a-day habit.
The other day, I was sitting at my desk getting a good deal of work done, blissfully unaware that cookie season had begun, when I was interrupted with a text from my mom.
“I got you this,” it read, with a picture of a box of Thin Mints and a Post It note with my name on it. She also drew a heart and an “XO."
Thanks, mom!
Thin Mints are my all-time favorite. And most of the population agrees with me, as they accounted for 25% of cookie sales in 2013, the top-selling cookie. Samoas, Tagalongs, Do-si-dos and Trefoils rounded out the Top 5.
Last year, Girl Scouts from the Gateway Council, which serves 16 North Florida counties, sold nearly 1.2 million boxes of cookies. In Flagler County, Girl Scouts sold 43,585 boxes and received $28,189 in proceeds.
But a box of Girl Scout cookies packs more than a sweet treat. The cookie program teaches Girl Scouts five business and leadership skills: goal-setting, decision-making, money-management, people skills and business ethics. As a former Girl Scout, I can tell you that in addition to these skills, cookie sales also brought out the competitive side of me. Sales is also an important business skill for women, especially in a male-dominated profession.
But cookie-selling has changed a little since I hung up my green vest. Now, they have an app for that!
The Girl Scout Cookie Finder app is available for Android and Apple phones. By entering your zip code, you’ll learn the location of the nearest cookie sales effort. Once downloaded, the app sends updates to your email, so you always know where to find your favorite flavor.
But that’s not all. Allthough Girl Scout cookies are only available Jan. 1 to March 31, cookie fanatics have a chance to win a year’s supply of cookies by participating in the Girl Scout Cookie Championship Giveaway. To enter, each participant must do all of the following four steps: Follow @Girlscouts on Twitter; download the Official Girl Scout Cookie Finder app; use the app to “Meet the Cookies;” and share your favorite cookie on Twitter via the Official Girl Scout Cookie Finder app.
Happy cookie eating, Flagler!
