PALM COAST — American Traffic Solutions, the company used by Palm Coast for its red light camera program, has released a public service announcement video, which takes viewers on an educational tour of the process at work behind ATS’ red light cameras.
The video shows how the camera system works, how violations are captured, what safeguards are in place to ensure accurate processing, and the criteria officers follow when deciding to issue a violation.
The distribution process for each dollar collected from a paid ticket is also explained.
In Palm Coast, data for its red light camera program shows motorists running red lights have tracked downward over the course of the program, which began in May 2008. It was expanded in May 2012.
The average per-camera number of red light violations was at four per camera per day when the program began, but it has since dropped to two per camera per day as of December 2013 — a 50% decrease in violations issued.
Palm Coast’s red light camera program data also shows that 85% of those who have received a violation are not reoffenders.
Florida is the third deadliest state in the nation for red-light running fatalities. In 2012, red light runners caused 4,803 traffic injuries in the state, costing communities more than $646 million. According to a recent Office of Program Policy Analysis and Government Accountability report, fatalities have dropped 49% at intersections with red light cameras.
