Refurbishment of the wooden fishing pier that extends under the western end of the Halifax River Bridge, connecting Bailey Riverbridge Gardens and Cassen Park, has been completed. In the two-year project, 1,500 feet of decking was replaced, providing a smoother walking surface.

“The wood had begun to dry up and flake off,” said Paul MacDonald, landscape architect for the city.

Replacement of the aluminum guardrails beneath both ends of the bridge, and the pier lights, were also part of the project, which cost $266,500 in community redevelopment area funds over the two-year period.

“We replaced all the pier lights and poles during Phase I of the project, last year,” MacDonald said. “We installed heavy-duty fiberglass poles and energy-efficient LED light fixtures along the entire length of the fishing pier.”

The aluminum guard rails are currently being installed.

MacDonald said new stainless steel hardware was installed at every piling, beam and joist, as well, to provide added strength to help the pier withstand future storms.

The project's contractor was Bomar Construction Inc., of Ormond Beach.
