What’s the future of the Matanzas Woods Golf Course? Residents want to have a say.

Stu Einhorn, Bob McKenna and others who live near the closed golf course in the L-section are hoping other residents will join them for a meeting 6:30-7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 14, at the Flagler County Public Library, to discuss the issue.

Einhorn is beginning to explore a three-pronged approach in hopes that, with the collaboration of residents, the city and the current owners, the course can be reopened in phases. The first phase of opening the driving range, Einhorn believes, could be relatively inexpensive and easily accomplished with volunteer labor.

“Eight guys can make that place decent in a week’s time,” he said.

Einhorn has also been in touch with an assistant to Arnold Palmer, who designed the course.

Grand Haven Realty President Jim Cullis looked into buying the course late last year but has since decided not to pursue it.

Einhorn said he can understand why people opposed the idea of transforming the course into a park or other development.

“People paid a premium and then they take the golf course away, and they’re angry,” he said. “Whenever you get hit in your pocket book, people start to sit up and take notice.”
