When Matanzas knocked off Mainland in a huge district game back in December, the Pirates were lights out shooting. That wasn’t the case on Tuesday night, in a rematch of District 5-6A opponents.
Matanzas couldn’t find a rhythm offensively, and Mainland managed to switch around its defense throughout the night, causing fits for Matanzas’ guards and coaching staff.
Mainland went on to win the game, 62-46.
“When we played them at home, we shot the ball much better,” Matanzas coach Dan Toblin said. “(Mainland) came out with a solid game plan to try and slow us down. They did a good job with it.”
Junior sharpshooter Madison Mlinac led the Pirates in scoring with 16 points — 15 of those came on five 3s. But not much else was falling for the Pirates on Tuesday. Sophomore Gerrod Wagner added 13 points.
Toblin said the key going forward for his side is to put an entire game together.
“We are playing good in spurts,” he said. “Our pure focus is on playing great team basketball. That’s what Matanzas basketball is all about. We don't care who the leading scorer is. All we care about is, ‘Did we do it as a team?’”
Matanzas (6-10, 2-5 District 5-6A) hosts New Smyrna Beach on Friday night in the second of four straight district games. The Pirates lost to New Smyrna Beach, 47-46, on Dec. 6.
Lady Pirates fall to Mainland, too
Back in Palm Coast, the Matanzas girls basketball team didn’t fare well against Mainland, either.
The Lady Bucs held Matanzas to three points in the first quarter and two points in the second quarter, winning the game, 46-25.
Paige Jennings led Matanzas in scoring with seven points. Sara Sheppard had three points and six rebounds.
Matanzas (4-11, 0-7 District 5-6A) looks to pick up its first district win Friday night when the Lady Pirates travel to New Smyrna Beach.
