Packed inside Flagler Palm Coast’s gym last Thursday, the noise of the weights and the bars getting thrown around drowned out the sound of any conversation. The noise of coaches yelling at lifters to push the bar farther off their chest was pretty loud, too.

In the end, the Seabreeze girls weightlifting team managed to send two lifters to sectionals after they placed in last week’s sub-sectional meet, which featured some of the best teams from around the state.

The sectional tournament will be Jan. 23, at Spruce Creek High School.

Representing Seabreeze will be seniors Alijea Russell and Alexis Raines. The top three lifters in each weight class qualified for the sectional meet.

Russell finished second in the 199-pound class. She bench-pressed 185 pounds and clean-and-jerked 160 pounds for a 325-pound total. Cherterickia Davis, of DeLand, won the weight class with a 355-pound total.

Raines finished third in the 183-pound class. She benched 145 pounds and clean-and-jerked 135 pounds for a 275-pound total. Natalie Janssem, of Spruce Creek, won the weight class with a 335-pound total. New Smyrna Beach’s Savannah Thenault took second place with a 295-pound total.

“I think both were a little shy of their season’s personal records,” Seabreeze girls weightlifting coach Randy Rorrer said. “I attribute that to coming off the holiday break and interruption of regular training.”

Russell finished first in her weight class at the 5-Star Conference meet last month. Raines finished third in her class.

“I expect both to exceed or match their personal records at the sectional meet,” Rorrer said.

Seabreeze had five other lifters compete at the sub-sectional meet: Taylor Daller, Kylee Howland, Amanda Driscoll, Shianne Cater and Marina Strong.

Daller, a freshman, was the Lady Sandcrabs’ next highest finisher, taking fifth place in the 101-pound class.
