Man shot in Ormond Beach

Police are investigating a shooting that occured early Thursday morning. The victim was  sent to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Following interviews with the victim, investigators in the Ormond Beach Police Department have reported that the victim, identified as 22-year-old  Tyler Dunagan, of this morning's shooting, at 729 Garden Lane, was alone, and that the shooting was accidental.

"The victim was adamant to detectives that he was alone, attempting to fix a defect on his hunting rifle when it accidentally discharged," Public Information Officer Keith Walker wrote in a press release. "The victim stated he was unaware that the rifle was loaded. The victim was struck in the face by the projectile."

Dunagan is in stable condition.

Police initially responded to a 911 call at 2:09 a.m. Thursday. Upon arrival, they found a male suffering from a gunshot wound. He was transported to Halifax Health Medical Center with life-threatening injuries.
