Every Thursday, the ladies who frequent the Convívio dos Lavores craft workshop at the Portuguese American Cultural Center of Palm Coast get together to network and do needle work, whether it is crocheting, knitting, needlepoint or cross-stitching.
Recently, the group decided to create something to benefit others in need. Following a suggestion by Odete Pinheiro, the group decided to create pillows to help patients of various diseases sit straight in the wheelchairs without falling to the sides due to lack of balance or strength.
These pillows have a middle hard surface, which is stuffed with quilting fabric on both sides so the patients don’t get hurt. The pillows are then covered with bright cloth. They are used under the arms, parallel to the body.
These volunteered designed, cut, stuffed and sewed more than 20 pillows. Between jokes and laughter, all was done in a jiffy.
Elizabeth Pereira, founder of the workshop, then donated the pillows to the Grand Oaks Health and Rehabilitation Center. Marta Waszkiewicz, physical therapist, and Patricia Mannello, health information coordinator from Grand Oaks, accepted the pillows
The workshop is open to anyone, 2 p.m. every Thursday. Call 446-0356.
