There’s a new type of vandal in Ormond Beach, and he's the kind who just might be in danger of shooting his eye out.
The Ormond Beach Police Department is currently investigating 38 reported cases of local BB gun vandalism. Though the targets are usually different, the type of weapon seems to be the same. Homes, cars and businesses have all reported having windows shot at with a BB gun-type weapon.
“The Rod's Carpet, they got them both times,” Ormond Beach Public Information Officer Keith Walker said. “They got Jimmy Johns once and they got somebody’s house. They even shot at an occupied vehicle that was on the road."
William Archibald was the man inside the car that was shot. He told the Ormond Beach Observer he was sitting at a red light when he heard a pop from his window.
“Something caught my neck,” said Archibald. “I still got a scar on the neck from that. It’s probably some kids, but I didn’t see nobody around.”
Carla Whitson said she had two windows surrounding her front door shot at while she was home. However, she didn’t find out about the vandalism until the next day.
“There’s a huge crack all the way across,” Whitson said. “But I didn’t hear anything. I think it happened sometime after I went to bed. I have a sound machine in my room and that drowns out the noise.”
According to Walker, the vandalism started late November. The most recent incident occurred Jan. 19.
Currently, there are no suspects; however, Walker said they believe the vandals are using a car, due to the distance between events that happened on the same day. Since the majority of shots were fired at unoccupied vehicles, Walker urges citizens to park closer to their homes.
“Some of the cars that got hit were parked on the grass," Walker said. "Everybody keep an eye out, and if somebody sees something, call us immediately.”
