PALM COAST — The Mainland boys basketball team has gone 7-1 since the winter break, but coach Landis McCoy is sticking to his guns: There are still many things his team needs to improve as they head into the district tournament next week, he said.

“It’s the same thing,” McCoy said after Tuesday’s 50-49 win over Flagler Palm Coast. “I don’t like to pinpoint issues, because when you pinpoint one issue, another issue comes up.”

Mainland (15-7) will have more than a week off before it begins play in the District 5-6A tournament.

The Bucs were supposed to close out the regular season Jan. 30 at home for Senior Night, but Evans pulled out of the game, McCoy said.

FPC (10-12) led 39-35 heading into the fourth quarter, but the Bucs forced three straight turnovers, which turned into a 46-41 lead with less than five minutes to go.

Leading 50-49 with 43 seconds left on the clock, Mainland turned the ball over on the inbound. FPC couldn’t drop the go-ahead bucket, though, and the Bucs held on to win their regular season finale.

Dexter Gooding led the way for the Bucs with 13 points. Marcus Brunson added eight points.

McCoy, who was wearing sneakers much like many college programs are doing this week for the Coaches vs. Cancer week, said he hopes his team will continue to improve next week.

Mainland won four straight district games (six overall) coming out of the winter break.
