They’re a hallmark of any little league all-star game. Tune out, for a moment, the sounds of cicadas, aluminum bat “pings” and the pop of a catcher’s mitt. Turn your ears instead, to the dugouts. More than likely, you’ll hear rhythmic cheers coming from the team who’s at-bat. Done right, these shrill tunes can elicit headaches — and a few rattled nerves from the opposing hurler.

They’re the closest thing youth baseball and softball has to oral tradition, and they’re derived from varied sources.

“There’s a lot of them that are old, and lot that we look up on the internet,” said Palm Coast 11- and 12-year-old softball all-star Sierra Luther. “Sometimes, we hear them (elsewhere) and think ‘that’s cool.'”

Here’s a sampling of Palm Coast’s chants from the sectional softball tournament last weekend.

-To encourage a batter:
Sydney is a friend of mine (rip, rip rip). She can rip it anytime (rip, rip, rip). Anytime or any place (rip, rip, rip). She can rip it in your face (rip, rip, rip).

After a runner’s called safe:
She’s safe, she’s safe, she’s made it to the base — and you let her have it. That’s a bad habit. Nei-ner, Nei-ner, Nei-ner, Oscar Meyer Weiner, with ketchup and mustard, and don’t forget the cheese. Make it hot, ‘cause your not. Make it cheddar, ‘cause we’re better. Make it, Swiss, ‘cause you wish you had skills like this.

This one’s self-explanatory:
Two-out rally (What do we want? What do we need?) Two-out rally (Give it to me, give it to me).
