The following is an adapted news release from Flagler County communications office:

A new storm evacuation study and evacuation zones, based on the probability of flooding from storm surge, was released recently by the Northeast Florida Regional Council.

The study is part of a Statewide Regional Evacuation Study Program. It contains updated information on Flagler County’s storm surge inundation zones, clearance times, identifies vulnerable populations and shelter demand. A map of the new zones and a wealth of other information on preparing for a storm or other disaster is available in the free Disaster Preparedness Guides being distributed throughout the County.

“The new data gives better information for our local evacuation zones,” Flagler County Public Safety and Emergency Services Manager Kevin Guthrie said. “These new zones take into consideration growth, development, tidal information and other variables.”

The new data and storm surge maps have provided an additional zone for storm flooding in west Flagler County in the event of certain storm conditions and also has additional areas in Palm Coast in potential storm surge areas.

“Based on the new data, there are now areas west of I-95 that could see flooding or storm surge under the right conditions,” Guthrie said.

The new maps and how to plan for emergencies and where to get information are available in Flagler County’s Disaster Preparedness Guide. The guide is also available on the www.flagleremergency.com website.

“It is important for residents to have a plan, know where and when they need to evacuate, what to take with them and what evacuation zone their home is located in,” Guthrie said. “Storm conditions will vary with each storm and the result is some areas of the county will be affected while others may not be affected. So it is important know what zone you live in.”
