He traveled the world ¬– Poland, Germany, Russia, Romania and India, to perform for Mother Teresa – before he moved from Stamford, Connecticut, to become the director of music and fine arts at Palm Coast United Methodist Church.

Jesse Chapman, 80, is retiring after 15 years of bringing the word of God to the church and community through his art.

“Music is my passion, my love, my career,” Chapman said. “It is everything to me.”

Chapman is no less enthusiastic than he was at 18 when he began performing in church and teaching piano.

“It’s a great means of communication,” he said. “It helped to sustain me. It’s an expression of God’s love.”

Chapman’s time and talent has been a blessing for the church, Pastor Kevin James said.

“Jesse Chapman has music in his soul,” James said. “Jesse’s passion and gift for music is revealed in his work ethic. I’m honored to have worked with him in the church.”

Friend and church member Clarence Brodnax made the recommendation to Chapman to apply for the position at the church, his wife, Betty Chapman, said.

“He nominated Jesse for the position, and people really wanted him in the choir,” Betty Chapman said. “It took a year to make arrangements to move from Stamford, but the church waited. It was something so wonderful. His abilities were appreciated.”

Chapman first retired from West Hill High School in Stamford where, as a choral instructor, his choirs were invited to perform around the world, Betty said.

“He has performed in all the best, acoustically sound cathedrals,” she said. “He went to India and performed for Mother Teresa. His commitment has always been well-received.”

Chapman is thankful for the opportunities he’s had.

“If people could realize how much I love making music, they would see I’m just returning God’s many blessings,” he said.
