Flagler County kids are good at reading and getting better in math, according to the numbers released June 6 by the state.
Sixth-graders ranked third out of 67 districts in the state for FCAT reading this spring. Fifth-graders ranked sixth in the state in reading. However, ninth- and 10th-graders struggled, both falling just below the state averages, and falling from about the top 25% in the state to about 35%.
One of the highlights, according to Superintendent Jacob Oliva, was the success in science testing.
“Fifth- and eighth-grade science is at the state average, which is historically an area where we’ve struggled,” Superintendent Jacob Oliva said. “Our students are showing significant gains.”
Testing Coordinator Shawn Schmidli added: “We’ve been focusing on it for about three years now, and this is the first time we’ve met the state 3-and-above for both of them.”
Another interesting result: Last year’s fifth-graders in Flagler County ranked 34th in the state in math, but that same group of kids jumped to a ranking of seventh in the state this year in sixth grade.
What can be done with these statistics? Oliva said the data help steer the direction of future efforts. School-by-school analyses will eventually lead to classroom-by-classroom trends.
“You can see the gains made and who’s making a difference,” he said. “We’ll be aligning our resources to support our areas of need.”
Next year, the FCAT will be phased out and replaced by more writing-intensive tests.
