Bunnell has chosen a city hall, voting 3-1 Monday, June 2 to purchase the Heritage Charter School campus on State Road 100.
The campus will cost $600,000, City Manager Larry Williams said, and Bunnell could spend up to $270,000 — an estimate Williams said is on the high side — getting it ready for move-in.
The city recently accepted the old county courthouse for a city hall, then turned it back over to the county after deciding it would cost too much to renovate.
The Heritage campus, Williams said, “fits our needs, and is a lot less money in the long run” than the courthouse would have been.
Bunnell Vice Mayor John Rogers and Commissioners Elbert Tucker and Bill Baxley voted to buy the campus, and Mayor Catherine Robinson voted against. Commissioner Bonita Robinson was not present during the vote.
The city would be getting three buildings out of the Heritage campus deal: the main building, which would house city storage and office space now dispersed in three different locations; an outbuilding that would become the headquarters of the Bunnell Police Department, and a third building that would be used for city commission meetings.
The closing won’t be held until at least July 10, Williams said.
In the meantime, the city is holding commission meetings in the Government Services Building, where it has stayed rent-free for five years. That arrangement ends soon: after Bunnell handed back the courthouse, the county commission voted to give the city until August to vacate the building or pay back rent.
Bunnell plans to move out of the Government Services Building by July 31, Williams said.
