Father Lopez AD, coach Berryhill headed to Trinity Prep

Trevor Berryhill will always remember the back-to-back-to-back district baseball championships he was a part of at Father Lopez. But after three years at the Daytona Beach-area school, Berryhill has accepted a position at Trinity Prep, a grade 6-12 school in Winter Park.

“I’ve loved my time at Father Lopez, and I was able to make a lot of great memories there, from the AD side of it, and also the baseball side,” Berryhill said.

At Trinity, Berryhill will serve as the middle school dean, the varsity baseball coach and will also teach PE. He was an assistant baseball coach at Trinity during the 2008-09 school year.

“It’s a program, and you’re able to have access to sixth- and seventh-graders and kind of teach them the ropes, and ingrain the staples of your program,” he said.

The search for his replacement at Father Lopez is ongoing.

“From my understanding, their priority is to hire an AD first,” Berryhill said. “If it goes together with AD and baseball, then they’re good with that. If not, the new AD will hire the baseball coach.

Toth retires from Mainland

Dick Toth, who has served as athletics director for the Daytona Beach-area school since 1987, is retiring.

Toth was a college basketball player at the University of Georgia in the early 1970s. He averaged 8.3 points per game for the Bulldogs, including two seasons spent as team captain. He then enjoyed a professional basketball career spent overseas in Belgium.

Toth also served as Mainland’s boys varsity basketball coach during his tenure, leading the Bucs to the Final Four in 1987. He coached future NBA star Vince Carter during the phenom’s freshman year at Mainland.

In all, Toth has been at Mainland for 35 years. He’ll be replaced by Pat Monahan.

Breakers seek club sanctioning

The U12 Ormond Beach Breakers are currently looking for a club to sanction its tournament team. The squad is no longer sanctioned as a tournament team through the Ormond Beach Soccer Club.

“We hope more clubs will entertain the idea of recreational tournament soccer (for those that cannot commit due to financial or time restraints), to allow girls and boys to experience skills, competition and success beyond what recreational seasonal soccer by volunteers can offer,” the team stated in a news release.

The team members are Vivianna Feigenbaum, Summer Klein, Brianna McLoughlin, Cameron Flositz, Madelyn Bronson, Alihya Hahn, Katrina Russell, Katherine Brick, Hannah Arnold, Grace Hawryluk, Gabrielle Johnston, Lexie Hooper and Nara Solis.

Bucky Classic softball tournament to be held in Ormond Beach

Stephen Buckholt was born and raised in Ormond Beach. After graduating from Seabreeze High School in 1995 and attending Valdosta State University, he eventually made his way south to the Florida Keys, working in his parents’ marina.

He died unexpectedly of a heart attack last Christmas Eve at age 36.

On June 28 at the Ormond Beach Sports Complex, the first Bucky Classic Men’s and Coed Softball Tournament will honor Buckholt’s memory and benefit the American Heart Association. June 29 is the rain date for the event.

Since Buckholt lived an active lifestyle, it came as a complete shock when he had a heart attack. But he had been a cigarette smoker since his teens, and even though his family had tried to persuade him to quit many times, he continued. Nobody expects to lose his life at the age of 36, and Buckholt never thought smoking would clog his arteries this quickly.

Participating teams will receive T-shirts, breakfast and snacks, sponsor bags, and trophies for first, second or third place finishes.

Four levels of sponsorship: Ted Williams ($100), Jackie Robinson ($250), Mickie Mantle ($500), and Babe Ruth ($1000) are available. For more information or to register, contact Greg Hunter at 451-1075 or by email at [email protected]
